A SQUARE [ABBOTT, Edwin]
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions
Large 8vo., plain beige card wrappers, with the illustrated vellum jacket with central image of a map of Flatland and then a two dimensional floorplan; pp [viii] [3] 4-100; with occasional diagrams within the text; a very good copy book with a fair wrapper, small amount of loss to spine ends; rough cut pages; some creasing to the front free end paper and a small split to the top of the spine, occasional foxing marks to the first couple of pages and moderately to the last couple; brittle and fragile vellum dust wrapper has lost most of its spine and is separated in two parts, chipping to the edges in particular to the lower panel; A fragile and rare survivor in reasonable condition.
A highly influential book, Flatland was written by 26 year old School Master Anthony Abbott Abbott (so good they named him twice). He oversaw the education of many of the great and good of that time including future Prime Minister H.H. Asquith but it was this classic of science fiction and mathematics that he shall be forever remembered.
Flatland is set in a two-dimensional world where life only exists in lines and shapes - until the main protagonist: A Square has his perspective transformed.
The great Isaac Asimov said of the book 'Flatland could lead to very profound thought about our universe and ourselves'.
In popular culture the novel is mentioned by many including Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, David Foster Wallace and erm Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory. It also gets a name drop in the film Interstellar and spawned several spin off books and TV programmes about it.
